Chainsnap gives us an album that is 9 tracks, and 34:53 in length.  The first thing you notice right off the bat is the very professional album cover and inserts.  Very clear, legible, and on high-gloss stock.  Hell Yeah!!..and that feeling continues as you pop the disk in.  Very nice recording, the album is clear throughout, no dragging bass frequencies, very clear vocals, and a complete lack of that "muddy" sound that you almost come to expect from most metal bands these days.  However, not only is the mud missing, but the guitar-work is excellent, and they aren’t afraid to use harmonics to set off a series.  They are also not afraid to do actual leads, which is refreshing.  So many bands nowadays aren’t doing leads at all anymore, so when you hear someone who does them, and does them well, it adds an immense amount of credibility to the skills of the band.  The music itself is overall nice and crunchy, not too fast for the most part, but it certainly has portions that are.  It stays in the lower octaves, and is kept in line by the incredible talent behind the skins.  This guy can drum very effectively, and his beats are well placed and steady.  Double bass is most definitely not a problem for him either, as he smokes them off in several killer drum presentations.  Vocally, the frontman is all over the spectrum.  From low end growls, to very forceful screams, the vocalist reminds me a lot of Phil Anselmo, which is one more point in their favor.  All in all this is certainly a band to watch.

Metalfests and arena's beware! Chainsnap who come from the state of Wisconsin are here and take no prisoners with this brand of Hardcore/Metal that chugs along eight cylinders of power.
On Hollow, Chainsnap give the listener many different sounds/influences on this disc. Dark and melodic at times as well as ultra Heavy when need be.
Fans of Godsmack, Pantera, Slayer and early Metallica will eat this stuff up. Solid riffs with groove and powerful bass as displayed on tracks such as "Spiral" and "Devil's Land". The title track to Hollow is bound to be a favorite of yours from the first few notes, as it's heavy guitar tones and groove take hold of you and wont let go. True mosh master for future reference.
What I like most about Chainsnap is the overall sound and not afraid to change things up from track to track.
Well written with lyrics full of hate and remorse, just what the Doctor of Metal ordered as your prescription for Chainsnap's non healing method awaits you any day now. Take it with a bottle of Jack Daniels and call me in the morning.

CHAINSNAP - HOLLOW (9 song CD)
This five piece band out of Central Wisconsin play some really good Metal-core type music. They have a really cool dark sound with tons of grooves tossed in the mix. They pull an even amount of elements from both Metal & hardcore to create their style. They rythm section is where most of the Hardcore influences come in. The guitars sound is where I hear the most Metal influences. The vocals are done in a crossover style of Metal & Hardcore, almost like CROWBAR, with more melodic parts though. These guys are well worth checking out!!! -

Chainsnap has, as I was once told, gone heavier on their new full-length debut than on their previous 3-song demo. And it sounds pretty good. Dark and groove-heavy, this is perfect mosh pit fodder (besides that bleeding guy in the corner that got trampled). There's a slight feeling of nu metal a la mudvayne morphed into driven throaty crisp hardcore stylings. This stuff is heavy and chunky and even has some nice whiny guitar solos, something often lacking in modern music. But it doesn't make it sound retro or 80s whatsoever. It fits perfectly into the modern metalcore attack. This is really good shit. By all means, give it a listen and visit their site!!!

Chainsnap. Wisconsin’s Chainsnap has just released a full-length album called Hollow, a pretty solid Panteraesque (without the insane soloing and drum work) metal platter. All nine tunes are chug monsters with an emphasis on the tough groove. The guys also have a good sense of song craft; each tune is distinct and fairly memorably. The only thing I’m not real crazy about is the use of clean/melodic vocals on “Devil’s Land” and (especially) “God’s Breath.” It doesn’t sound natural (forced really) and just doesn’t work very well for these guys. I’ll give them props for the effort though. Where the band shines is in their use of stuttering jackhammer rhythms on songs like “Spiral” and the excellent “Bloodlust.” Stick to that guys.

CHAINSNAP Interview

by Freddy Metal

Chainsnap formed mid summer 2002. On August 24th 2002 Chainsnap played their first show at Four Stools Short, In Wisconsin Rapids, WI opening for "PECH" A local cover band. The set included 8 cover songs from the likes of Static X, Rob Zombie, Godsmack, Seven Dust, and more. A few more shows were to follow while adding more covers each time. Thanks to "PECH", the Chainsnap shows continued throughout the 2002-2003 winter season.

Over the spring of 2003, Chainsnap recorded their first CD. A three song demo that included the bands first original works, including, Gods Breath, Death By Deception, and Wanted Soul. Chainsnap pressed a total of 320 Copies to sell, and send out to music professionals. After a few more shows, that now included upwards of 20 cover songs, and three originals, the team went back in the studio in the fall and early winter of 2003 to record the full length CD "Hollow"

Where & what studio did the production of Hollow take place?
The "Hollow" CD was recorded in the middle of the woods in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin @ Strantrax studios www.strantrax.com.

What's the bands long & short term goals as far as touring, recording, writeing ect?
Perform and promote is all we are doing now. We will soon be working on a few new songs for our next CD or as bonus tracks for the next print of "Hollow"

What would you say is your biggest gripe about the music industry?
Many venues seem to be staying away from new bands...it's getting harder and more expensive to get your name out there.

What type of image would you say the band projects?
We tend to project a dark and evil image, but yet doing it the old style( i'm sick of the term "old school")

Do all members contribute to the writing & arrangements of your original tunes?
We all contribute. The musicians write most of the music and Steve, the lead vocalist, does most the lyrics but we all pitch in.

How did the band name "CHAINSNAP" come about?
The lead singer, Steve, got this name from a plumbers tool.

What's the band's long & short term goals as far as touring, recording, writing etc..?
Short term is perform and promote. At the end of the year we will most likely start recording a new CD.

Are you happy with where Chainsnap stands today in the Int'l underground Hard music scene?
Chainsnap has been active in getting music out all over the world. Our CD's and/or mp3's are in or on radio stations and websites in Greece, Australia, Great Britian, Canada, Brazil. Mexico. England, Germany , Italy and all over the US.

What do you feel sets Chainsnap apart from other Metal Acts?
We are not nu-metal or old school...but we mix and come up with a variety of song styles but yet all metal on the "Hollow" CD. We also thrive to entertain for our live performance with high energy.

What does each member bring into the band?
Alex, the drummer, brings straight forward metal pounding and beats. Matt, on bass, brings some classic thrash bass riffs to the band. Steve, lead vox, brings a needed vocal range to our band so all of our songs don't sound the same. Jermey, lead guitar, brings the musically correct leads and technical side to add to my(Keith) straight up no frills mosh guitar riffs.

How about the low-down such as how you guys formed the band & how long you have been together?
Matt, the bass player, and myself have been trying to get a band going for years with constant band member changes. We hooked up with Jermey in early 2002 and hooked up with Alex, the drummer, mid 2002. Alex had been in the band before. Steve, the lead vocalist was the final addition. Matt and I met him at a Blues music fest, we set up a try out, and he was in. By the end of 2002 we were performing shows and early 2003 we released our 3 song promo CD.

What is the most outrageous thing that ever happened to you on stage during a performance or rehersel?
So far, i would say our show at The Rave in Milwaukee, WI. I smashed a guitar after a solo and broke the stage stairs - they looked sturdy at the time.

Your musical influences and why?
We all have a few of our own, but over all I would say Pantera and Slayer for our old style and Mudvayne and System of the Down for our new style. But, we all have a little of our own...Alex has the Misfits , Matt has Six Feet Under, Jermey has Metallica, Steve has Kiss and i have Anthrax.

What can fans expect to see at a live show?
High energy that usually results in something getting broke.

Where do you see the band in 5 years?
Hopefully signed and performing enough so we can quit these damn day jobs that are getting in the way.

Who would you like to tour with and why?
Stick us on Ozzfest every year and a few metal fests and we will be set. Those big shows are the way to go- so many people get exposed to you r music that way.

Do you have a special ritual that you guys do before you hit the stage?
Beer.

What is your fan base like?
We have our group of friends that have been backing us from day/band one. We also are starting to get a following in the Midwest part of the US with all the performances, website listings, radio play and free CD's given out.

Parting shot?
I'll take Tequila.

A band of proud Heavycore members, Chainsnap worked the crowd like nobody's business! While they do have a "Nu" style, these guys actually found a way to NOT suck! A crowd was formed in anticipation way before the previous band was finished with their set, proving these guys have a following no matter where they play.

What I appreciated was the fact that these guys actually clearly introduced themselves, before and after their set, which, believe it or not, was a rarity at Metalfest! Technical problems aside, such as sound and lights, Chainsnap made due with what they were given and busted some serious ass! They got heart and talent; two things that truly matter most, in my opinion, so I highly recommend folks to at least look into these guys, even if Nu ain't your style.

Heavy like a harley with a stomp like vintage zilla, the boys of Chainsnap garner just enough hate to fire the blast furnace.  "Spiral" is classic grind, but the maiden style verse in "Devil's Land" just doesn't work, until they apply the blast beat and Steve Schiller shits a telephone pole.  Chainsnap are best when they break down the gates and mosh like motherfuckers (hear "Death By Deception") while keeping a heavy steady riff offset by tight timing in. It works well on the sabbath too, as applied on "Cut And Dry", though Ozzy never sounded half as pissed as Schiller. Guitarists Jermey Haasl and Keith Monville keep it tuned down and roaring throughout all 9 songs, using breaks and changes more than lead solos, though the ones they do fit like they were meant to be there, and accent the feel of the songs more than showy pyro. Chainsnap bring the fire on "Lost" before going dark on "Wanted Soul", and turning heads into mush with "God's Breath".  Whatever kind of metal you want, Chainsnap serve it up on Hollow.

3-Hollow

4-Death by Deception

5-Cut and Dry

6-Lost

7-Wanted Soul

8-God´s Breath

9- Bloodlust

Powerful riffs with original drumming opens up "Spiral" showing that this band can combine the most extreme side of metal with some modern influences that give the band their own identity. Crushing guitars are the main thing here delivering interesting rhythmic riffs that are carefully developed in order to give that powerful feeling that this music must have. the vocals are really aggressive giving an extra power to the music and sounding really clear with some modenr metal and hardcore influences. The rhythm section is really solid and the drumming is always adding elements in order to embellish this rhythms with some patterns that are not common in the style. I have to reamrk also the guitar solos, some of them played with wah wah that give a different feeling to the music here. Pure aggression and power unleashed in nine tracks !

The Harder Than Better Vol.5" i "Vol.6".

CHAINSNAP "Hollow"

Punchy, catchy guitars are accented nicely with bass bumping along to really accent the heavy groove. Vocals are executed with a smooth and rhythmical growling that increases and pronounces the driving intensity. The drums are very rhythmic punctuating the riffs and pummeling the senses. Great breakdowns between choruses that build into ringing chords and thunderous drumming. Unleashing energy, they strike brutally with their relentless and pounding pit rhythms. Sharing a taste of their softer side they do incorporate a short melodic intro and some clean singing vocals before letting loose their hard-hitting fury of metal. This is definitely a slamming CD, perfect for the discriminating metal fan. [Maria Weeks]
